Publishing a Book

Step 1: Creation

The first step to publishing a book is to write it (obviously). And yet there is far more to it than simply writing the book. Will the book be a single piece or part of a series? How often will you be releasing new titles? What size and format do you envision the book in someone’s hands when they are reading it? Will it be a hardcover or paperback? The book will need to be edited, proofed, and formatted to print. Have you found a cost effective printer? And what about the design? The cover and the interior both need to be designed and formatted properly according to print specs. Photographs need to be high resolution as well as the artwork. If all of this sounds overwhelming, don’t worry! If you write it, we can take care of the rest. See our step by step checklist to help you get started.

Step 2: Publishing

Now that the hard part is done, it’s time to publish! Instead of seeking out an agent or never hearing back from the tiny handful of large publishing companies that will take unsolicited works, you’ve decided to self publish. Maybe the rejection letters were getting old or maybe you got tired of waiting. Either way, you’ve decided to take matters into your own hands and that is an empowering accomplishment. Congrats! But now you’ve taken it a step further and have found a publisher (us) who believes in you and is willing to take your hand and guide you throughout the process. Now you don’t have to spend months hitting unexpected roadblocks or making harsh discoveries on your own. We’ve been there, done that. So we know how to navigate the waters and give you a leg up on your competition. By having a professional publishing company to back you, you no longer have to say “I self published”. You will have a credible appearance right from the start, along with a very stylish book design that is sure to grab attention.

Step 3: Distribution

Now that your book is printed and in your hands, you will need to get them into other people’s hands. Preferably lots of them. There are a few ways you can do this. The first option is to partner with a distrubutor who will do this part for you. In general, distributors want to work with reputable authors who are producing high quality work and publishing books on a regular basis. This is why distributors are more likely to partner with a publishing company rather than an individual who self publishes. By having a high quality product with a professional publisher, you will already have an advantage when you make that phone call. The other option is to set up wholesale ordering and offer your book at a discounted price to bookstores, libraries and shops. And when it comes to shipping your orders, you can start by mailing out orders yourself or you can use Amazon fulfillment.

Step 4: Promotion

Promoting your book should be fun! There are a lot of ways to do this and the first step is to create an online presence. You can create your own website for the book using eCommerce platforms such as Shopify. Or you can sell on Amazon. You’ll want to create a Facebook page, and this could either be an author page or a page for the book (or both). Social media such as Instagram and Pinterest are great ways to get your book out there as well using beautiful imagery and content from your book. You can also call around to bookstores and coffee shops to arrange book readings and signings. Get imaginative and put yourself out there!
